This month of February I want to feature on my blog a couple overviews of some most exclusive niche perfume houses, starting with Puredistance. This independent perfume house from the Netherlands creates remarkable and exquisite fragrances. I think that any of these luxurious perfumes can be a special gift for your loved one.
Puredistance fragrances are pure perfume extract concentration with a high percent of natural oils that vary between 25-38%, using the best quality materials. Being an independent perfume house, they create their fragrances with one of the true luxuries of perfume making today. Perfume creation is a complex art form, and to produce their masterful fragrances, no specific deadlines are given to the perfumer. This is different to how perfumes are often made these days, especially for the mass market. The house exists since 2007, yet they currently have only 7 perfumes in their collection, with a launch once every one or two years.
I am pondering over a question this month of February: What is a romantic fragrance ? Is it one that creates instant attraction and intrigue ? Is it a sensuous, deep scent that hints at the sultry side of your personality ? Alternatively, may it be a fragrance that inspires the feeling of tenderness ? White by Puredistance is a fragrance that not only captures tenderness, this perfume transmits a blissful aura on the wearer. There is no doubt in my mind that it is a romantic fragrance, created especially for women.
White was released in 2015. The perfumer, Antoine Lie has been working on the formula for a year, hoping to make people feel joyful and smile when they smell White. It certainly has that effect on me. With a name like this, purity is definitely one of the main themes, but make no mistake – White is not like any other perfume that creates a sense of purity and cleanliness. It is a very sophisticated dance of notes which is delicate in its nature. The composition of White lifts yours spirits, all the while inducing the tranquility of mind. It includes the ingredients of May rose from France, tonka absolute from Venezuela, orris root absolute from Italy, Mysore sandalwood, Italian bergamot, musk, Haiti vetiver and Indonesian patchouli. Like all the other Puredistance fragrances, it is a perfume extract. White has 38% perfume oil concentration.
My image association with White is Sandro Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’. This fragrance is reminiscent of the ideal feminine beauty that this famous painting portrays, and the sense of harmony that this image inspires. I think that White has no season, because I see it as a possible signature perfume. However, if I had to attribute a particular season to this fragrance, I would say that it makes me think of spring. As for a color association, it is specifically the mother of pearls that the composition of White evokes for me. I visualize a polished white surface that has additional nuances of pink, lilac, blue-green, and yellow. Similarly, the various notes of this fragrance glisten over a white musk base.
I think that White represents the standards of this perfume house particularly well :
« It all started with a dream founder Jan Ewoud Vos once had in 2002 – half sleeping, half awake – he pictured an elegant lady, minimally dressed in a simple, elegant white dress, stepping into a room where people have a party. People drinking, some people showing off, people overdressing, people talking too loud… The lady is barefooted. The lady does not wear any logo’s or jewelry. Apart from the white dress she wears nothing. And she is stunningly beautiful. In a pure way… her pure beauty creates a distance: ‘PUREDISTANCE’. »
Puredistance 1 is the first perfume that this house launched in 2007. The perfumer is Annie Buzantian, and the story goes that she initially made this Perfume for herself, creating her own private masterpiece.
To me this fragrance seems to have been made for a chic lady. Her graceful movements and attitude are captivating to observe. She has an innate sense of style. She knows herself, and she does not require expensive designer dresses to look amazing. Puredistance descriptive of this perfume references the elegance of Grace Kelly. I would rather associate Puredistance 1 with Ava Gardner, who’s image I find, corresponds better to its beguiling juxtaposition of cool and warm.
Puredistance 1 is a soft floriental that starts out with a cheerful mandarin note. The floral heart is dominated by the notes of magnolia and mimosa. Puredistance 1 has a slightly playful, sweet angle, yet stays mature and sophisticated. There is a soft and sensuous amber and musk base. The vetiver brings a cool and earthy touch to to the composition. Just like White, Puredistance 1 is a personal perfume that wears close to the skin, and does not have the ‘look at me’ factor.
The Ingredients are: Tangerine Blossom, Cassis, Neroli Bigarade, Magnolia, Rose Wardia, Jasmine, Natural Mimosa, Sweet Amber, Vetiver and White Musk. Pure Perfume Extract: 32% perfume oil
Opardu is s a lilac centered floral perfume created by Annie Buzantian, and launched in 2012. The inspiration behind this fragrance are the romantic memories of vintage Paris. This lush floral perfume is my second favorite from the Puredistance line. Opardu is a whirlpool of heady florals that doesn’t seem heavy at all. It is fresh and powdery, yet intoxicating.
I imagine this flower bouquet glowing under the sunset lights of the city, as I walk by the river Seine in May, and look at the multi colored, changing colors of the sky. This special moment between day and night brings the magic of tranquil excitement, which is the mood that Opardu sets for me.
The Ingredients are: Tuberose Absolute, Gardenia, Bulgarian Rose, Purple Lilac, Carnation, Jasmine Absolute, Heliotrope and Cedarwood. Pure Perfume Extract: 32% perfume oil.
Antonia, to my nose is one of the most interesting floral green fragrances that I have ever smelled. It is gentle, yet full of character and emotion. In my mind it represents the oneiric atmosphere of Andrei Tarkovsky’s polaroid.
It is very powdery, and almost dusty-green. I get a sense of longing for the rain, as the wind brings movement to the beautiful landscape scenery. The colors change from an emerald green to a deep blue.
The notes that stand out the most to my nose are Ivy, Jamine and Vetiver.
Created by Annie Buzantian in 2010; the ingredients of this perfume are: Jasmine, Rose Essence, Ylang Ylang, Orris, Ivy green, Galbanum, Vanilla and Vetiver. Pure Perfume Extract: 25% perfume oil.
This mesmerizing oriental fragrance instantly made me think of a caravan lead by a nomad in the desert. He is heading home to his beautiful young wife. The shapes of the dunes in the sunset remind him of her as he approaches the destination. When he arrives, the dark sky has a million stars. They drink tea in silence as he admires her beauty, and she shyly hides away from his gaze.
Unlike the other Puredistance perfumes, Sheiduna in my mind is a completely unisex fragrance. It bears no resemblance to any oriental perfumes I have smelled before, yet it has all the DNA of a spicy oriental fragrance – the exotic spiciness, the dry smokiness, the warming resinous notes, and the radiant tangerine. It is a powerful scent, and very long-lasting. Sheiduna was created by Cécile Zarokian in 2016. If you are looking for a warming winter oriental perfume, I suggest to try this one.
Lemon, tangerine, blackcurrant, aldehydes, Bulgarian rose essence, geranium, clove, vetyver, patchouly, amber woody, incense, benzoin, myrrh, tonka bean, vanilla pods and musks. Perfume Extract: 27% perfume oil.
Puredistance M is a smoldering and sensual, masculine leather chypre perfume created by Roja Dove in 2010. It brings to mind the image of Steve McQueen in a car. The idea behind this fragrance was to give the wearer the sensation being inside the new leather interior of a grey Aston Martin. The dry-down is « animalic » to my nose, and the whole experience made me think of classic men’s fragrances in general. It has force, elegance, sensuality and brings the feeling of confidence.
The Ingredients are: Bergamot, Lemon, Rose, Jasmine, Cinnamon, Patchouli, Mosses, Cistus, Vetiver, Vanilla, Leather & Musk. Pure Perfume Extract: 25% perfume oil.
“Envision. Smell. Feel. Don’t analyze.”
The notes of this perfume created in 2013 by Antoine Lie are not revealed.
I would say that Black by Puredistance has a prominently woody scent. It actually made me think of a forest. These are the darker woods. It is deep and smoky, but the spices give it freshness, so it doesn’t feel too heavy. I find that it is very pleasant and reassuring. It is dark and restrained, but not oppressing or gloomy. Black is a mature, serious, masculine perfume that is perfect all year round, with the exception of warm summer days. I think it is a great day-time fragrance.
Leaving the best image for last – here is a photo of Paul Newman whom I envision wearing Black.
