Wishing you a wonderful weekend with one of my very first niche fragrances – L’Ombre dans l’Eau by Diptyque, in eau de toilette concentration. I have purchased a few bottles since I have first fallen in love with it, and it was love at first sniff too. I could not explain it at first, why I was so attracted to this perfume. I realized later on that it conjured up my best childhood memories.
I remember a time when wearing a perfume like L’ombre dans l’Eau could be considered as somewhat different, and unexpected. Today it is not the case. L’ombre dans l’Eau is one of Diptyque’s perfumes that got a lot of hype from beauty and fashion bloggers on social media. At some point I started seeing a lot of Diptyque’s candles on Instagram and Pinterest, as well as the perfumes that this house is most famous for. However, to me Diptyque is a house that remains far from the mainstream, with their surprising accords inspired by nature and travel. In fact, I would go as far as saying that the ‘signature’ of this house is in the idea of creating unique, contemplative fragrances that immerse you in a particular atmosphere. They may bring up olfactory memories or make you imagine a special place. It is quintessentially a Parisian house, for people that can appreciate “something unexpected” and different. I perceive Diptyque’s perfume creations as ‘intellectual’, for people who like to express their individuality.
L’ombre dans l’Eau (Shadow on the Water) was created in 1983 by Serge Kalougine, and it was one of the fragrances worn by Lauren Bacall. To me it is about a summer garden. It takes me back to my childhood, smelling blackcurrant leaves, discovering various flowers and plants on my grandparents’ datcha (summer house), and laying in a hammock protected from the sun by the leaves of two gigantic birch trees. We had quite a few blackcurrant bushes and rose bushes in the garden.
I really enjoy wearing L’Ombre dans l’eau in the beginning of the fall since it reminds me of bygone summer, but the perfect season for this perfume is summer in my opinion. This fragrance is mostly centered around blackcurrant leaf and Bulgarian rose notes. Somehow this combination seems original even to this day, with the niche perfume market growing rapidly and our noses being introduced to less ‘typical’ fragrances. It is a linear and very long-lasting fragrance in the eau de toilette concentration. L’ombre dans l’eau is one of these ‘atmosphere’ type of fragrances that is neither feminine, nor masculine. The name remains a mystery to me, as there are no aquatic notes in this perfume. It doesn’t make me think of a pond, rather a cool atmosphere in the shadows of a summer garden.
Featured in the photo is a spring 2017 limited edition Burberry blush palette, which I have been hesitant to use so far. Now I am ready to destroy the beautiful embossed floral pattern. It’s a mauve-toned pink color with lovely shimmer.
I only have the eau de toilette concentration of L’omre dans l’Eau, and have yet to compare it to the eau de parfum version. L’ombre dans l’eau is also available in a stunning limited edition bottle in Diptyque stores and their online boutique. It would be the perfect gift for some one who has a special place in their heart for this fragrance. Just saying 😉
I am also really excited about the fabulous re-design of Diptyque’s hourglass diffusers for the home! They are available in six Diptyque home fragrances: Baies, Figuier, Roses, Fleur d’Oranger, Gingembre, and the fragrance that represents the Diptyque’s flagship boutique in Paris – “34 boulevard Saint Germain”, which opened in 1961.
